2.4.1.    South Wales

Once the valleys of South Wales were busy places filled with coal mines and steel works. The Rhondda became famous by the novel 'How Green Was My Valley' which tells the story of the miners. The generous support of the National Coal Board made the following photographs possible. Sadly little of what has been captured in the images has remained. I am wondering, what might have happened to all those friendly miners, who gave me any possible help when I visited the area.

There is a little story about the following image: When I first came across South Wales on a trip to Ireland, I discovered the beautiful mine 'Six Bells' just by chance. As I had to catch my ferry, I did not find the time to take images of the mine and it's beautiful headframe. When I returned in 1990 'Six Bells' was already demolished. But during my visit of 'Deep Navigation', the man responsible for the lamps had a nice chat with me and he finally gave me the token shown on the image. I will never forget this joyful moment, which almost made me forget the sad moment, when I had to realize, that 'Six Bells' would never again ring the bell.
