4.1.    Mills, Warehouses

Mills and Warehouses are the dominating buildings especially in harbour areas. The abandoned grain mill at Wismar harbour is an outstanding example for this kind of industrial architecture.

4.1.1.    Hamburg Speicherstadt

When Hamburg was forced to reduce the size of it's free port ('Freihafen') in 1881, it was decided to build new warehouses replacing the old ones, which were scattered around Hamburg. The resulting buildings form a unique ensemble, the so called 'Speicherstadt'. Some of the beautiful warehouses are still in use to store valuable goods like carpets and tea, others have been converted into offices.
